The BVA would like to extend congratulations to Joshua Malpas for winning the Denton Hurdle Memorial Award.  This is the highest honour the Bermuda School Sports Federation awards each year and requires a balance of athletics, academics and community involvement.   The BVA is very proud to have Josh as an active member within our sport!  Congrats!

“I have been a junior member of the Bermuda Volleyball Association for at least the last 3 years. With the support of my coaches for both the junior national team and the mens national team I have had the opportunity to grow as a player and athlete.  I have travelled and represented both the BVA and Bermuda in volleyball on numerous occasions and in 2011 was part of the men’s national team who competed in the NatWest Games in Isle of Wight and in Anguilla with the junior national team where we brought home the silver medal.  Volleyball is a tough sport and requires you to use your body and your brain, it is after all a game of strategy.  I enjoy playing the game – it is a great game and offers much opportunity to young people for sport and recreation.  Winning the Denton Hurdle award has meant a great deal to me and I thank everyone who has supported me.”

Sincerely Joshua Malpas

Josh’s coach Bill Bucci, had the following to say about him:

“In order to win the Denton Hurdle Memorial Award a student must show excellence in Academics, Athletics and Community Service.  In the 27 years the Bermuda School Sports Federation (BSSF) has been giving out the Denton Hurdle Memorial Award it has never been won by a student whose primary sport is volleyball.  It is a tremendous achievement for Joshua and the sport of volleyball for him to have won this award. It not only show what an excellent volleyball player he is but also what an amazing person.  He may be quiet but underneath that quiet exterior is a smart, caring and driven young man.  Sports for many is a part of their lives, but life is much more than just sports.  Joshua has found a way to balance school, sports, friends and family, yet still found time to teach kids to swim and give back to his community.  Not only has he done all these thing, he has done them all so well that the BSSF has seen fit to give him an award named after a man who embodied all of those things and more.  Congratulations Joshua, thank you for being part of the Bermuda Volleyball Program and making the program better for you participating. “

Sincerely Coach Bill Bucci
